June is Pride Month, where the Capricorn Coast community is celebrating our Rainbow community members, and supporting them in their ongoing struggle for equality and visibility.
The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and other sexuality, gender and bodily diverse (LGBTIQA+) peoples in Australia are predicted to be around 11% of the population. Within this large sector, Livingstone Living Well acknowledge the diversity of both the LGBTIQA+ people and their communities. Their lived experiences can be vastly different, and by acknowledging this, people can display Allyship and support visibility and voices.
Most people experience stress in their lives that can impact on mental health and wellbeing. Mindrame highlight drivers of distress for the LGBTQIA+ community are issues like "discrimination, stigma, marginalisation, exclusion and violence" and suggest these should be the focus of communications INSTEAD of "on someone's sexuality, gender or innate variations of sex characteristics (intersex)". Being an ally means recognising the importance of presenting information about mental health concerns and suicide in helpful ways.
To honour, support and promote community allyship, Livingstone Living Well are seeking nominations to identify a Capricorn Coast LGBTIQA+ Ally Community Champion. Self-nominations are welcome. All nominations will be acknowledged, and a prize and capacity-building resources presented to the winner. The judges are from the Rainbow Community.
Nominations are due 14 June 2026 midnight.
